What a great weekend. This has been my birthday gift from Sarah and I will always remember the fun that we shared this weekend.....
We left at 10 to catch the bus to Imbert and then from Imbert to Santiago and from there to Santa Domingo. We arrived in Santa Domingo at four, just enough time to find a room for the night. Luckily we had Camilla with us, who used to go to school in Santa Domingo and she also speaks spanish, which turned out to be of great help.
Once we arrived in Santa Domingo we walked to the other side of town, the colonial zone, this was suppose to be the better part of Santa Domingo. It did not take long for us to find a room and to settle in. After the six hours bus trip we were eager to find something to eat and drink. As we were staying right in the middle of the colonial zone, everything was in 5 minutes walking distance. Wow, what a change to sticky, dirty Luperon. A touch of civilisation, culture and history was awaiting us, Cafes, Restaurants, Bars, churches, cathedrals, parks, museums ..... you name it.
That Friday night the school of art displayed their creation in the park.... mindblowing. After we had stilled our first thirst of hunger and for culture we went night clubbing...... we went to the gay clubs, according to Sarah you will have so much more fun there, they know how to party..... and boy did they know how to party..... that night we made it home at 3..... and only because everything has to close at 3 by law.
Not to waste any time we got up early on Saturday morning for a nice breakfast in one of the street cafes. After that we visited the Cathedral, who claims that they have got the remains of Christopher Columbus. We appreciated our lesson on the history of the Dominican Republic......
After that we made our way to the Fort, where we took some nice pictures.....thank you Sarah.... I love them......
Thereafter we met Camilla for Lunch in Chinatown. The food is ok, we should have sticked to the local food. Time to get back to the Colonial Zone for a ride in the horse coach and then its shopping time......yeah.... thats what a girl weekend is all about.....At 7 we are suppose to me Camillas friend in the park for a drink ..... and to get the real deal we witness a wedding in the Cathedral. Not only was it a wedding, they had three people singing the Ave Maria, Halleluja and ....because I love you from Celion Dion, life in the cathedral. The accustic in that cathedral was awesome and we stayed for the whole time to watch the wedding..... after that it was party time again, even though I had my dash of partying .... there was no time for a rest. Camilla's friends had invited us for a late dinner.... they wanted to cook for us and they did....... We had so much fun that evening and again we did not find our bed until three..... oh my god and I had to catch the bus the next morning at 8.30......
On Sunday I got on the bus allright, thinking that I would be able to catch up on some sleep, but oh no the bus driver had a different idea..... the music was so loud in the bus, there was not a chance to get some sleep.... the aircondition did not work and everytime the bus had to stop the brakes made an awful noise and he did stop every 5 minutes......when I got of the bus after 6 hours my head and body were still pumping from all that noise..... I made it to the boat.... greeted my family, went for a swim and collapsed at 5 ..... into dreamland.
I had such a wonderful time down in Santa Domingo and hope that I can do it again sometimes soon..... Thank you to Sarah, Lynn, Merilyn and Camilla without you guys it would have not been sooooo much fun and great experience.....
